What is CGC? The purpose of the Canine Good Citizen Test is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community. Dogs become respected members of their communities when they are trained to act mannerly in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. All dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds are embraced by and welcomed in the Canine Good Citizen program.

What does this class cover? The Canine Good Citizen class covers the ten behaviors required to pass the CGC test but also works on advanced beginner behaviors and skills needed to build a strong foundation for all dog sports and training. Canine Good Citizen behaviors include walking politely on a loose lead, greeting strangers without jumping or lunging, allowing grooming and examination of feet and ears, basic obedience skills including stay and come when called, appropriate reactions to other dogs, appropriate reactions to distractions and environmental stimuli, and much more. Some advanced beginner skills we may cover include beginning formal heeling, longer stays, introduction of challenging distractions, fronts, and basic skills needed to build a foundation for all dog sports.

Prerequisites: Beginner Obedience or STAR Puppy or equivalent. “Home trained” dogs who have had no previous classes but have basic skills may also enter class with permission of instructor. Severely fearful dogs and dogs who are seriously reactive to noises, dogs and humans should not take this class.

Who should take this class? Dogs who are over-excited in greeting other dogs and people, dogs who need to solidify basic skills, dogs who are somewhat reserved and need more exposure to “life”, dogs who plan to go on to therapy work, dogs who are required to pass the CGC by an HOA or other organization, dogs whose handlers wish to continue into other sports.

There is a four dog minimum for this class to begin (we need other people and dogs present) so if we don’t have that number by the start date, we will move it back a week until we do. Cost of the class is $100 which will include administration of the Canine Good Citizen test at the end of the four weeks.
